5 Tips to Avoid Storm Damage in CNY

There is very little you can do to prevent storm damage from ever occurring. We can’t control Mother Nature, but we can certainly be proactive to try to prevent the damage that those storms often bring with them to Central New York.

CNY faces winter storms during the cold seasons, as well as some severe summer storms. Take a look at these 5 simple tips to help protect your home or business when Mother Nature strikes.

1. Check Those Gutters

Did you know that one of the most common causes of water damage is actually your gutters? While there are several other causes, gutters that aren’t properly cleaned or maintained could lead to damage when it storms.

When gutters can’t do their job, the water finds its way into your building, basement, and other areas.

2. Keep Trees Trimmed

Another common issue with storms is the potential for tree limbs to land on the roof or come through the window. You can help prevent this possibility by trimming the trees.

We recommend you trim up the trees or have someone else trim them once or twice a year. Before storm season starts is always a good time to do so.

3. Reduce Loose Items Outdoors

When the wind picks up, it can move things around in a hurry. That patio chair could get picked up and tossed around. The bicycle in the front yard could cause damage.

Be proactive about securing things that are outdoors so they can’t move in the wind. Do your best to put lightweight things away as well.

4. Roof Storm Damage Protection

Your roof is a highly vulnerable location. If shingles get torn away, your home or business is exposed. When you know you have places that need to be fixed, don’t ignore them. Get missing and damaged shingles replaced and repaired as soon as possible.

If you have a leak somewhere, get that patched and repaired as well. This will be essential to the safety of your home and preventing damages.

5.  Be Aware and Prepared

The little things can often make a huge difference. For example, if you rely on a sump pump, keep it maintained and inspected. This will help prevent water in the basement. Be vigilant about your doors and windows, sealing any cracks or openings that could allow water through.

Have a go-bag or set of supplies in case a storm does come barreling through. Be prepared to take action quickly. Do your best to ensure water is flowing away from the home and not into the home.

All of these little steps can make a big difference.
